‘The Future Builders’ was written during the Coronavirus lockdown period in Australia.
It gave Norman pause to reflect on what he learnt about uncertainty and the difficulties in understanding the future during his years in business and consulting.
In particular, he reflected on the fact, through our daily decisions and actions, that we are always contributing to the future in some small way. As he re-read some of the articles he had written over the last 10 years as part of his own research and consulting activities, he began to form the ideas around this book.
The title, ‘The Future Builders’, reflects his thoughts about the way that we make decisions and take actions in ways that build and shape the future. ‘The Future Builders’ is a set of 37 articles arranged into six themes — each one a chapter. While each article was written separately at different times, they provide a reasonably coherent message about the way that we can, and do, build the future by our decisions and actions.
While his first book, ‘Strategic Alignment’, focused on the way that leaders and organisations can be successful in their current market and environmental conditions, ‘The Future Builders’ addresses the future. How can we think about and shape the future while living in increasingly uncertain and changing conditions.
